As outlined by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), a graduate degree is required to enter the midwifery practice. Accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME), review the opportunities to start your midwife career with a fully distant, online program.

While researching for the best online master’s of science in nursing (MSN) programs for you, consider these factors: coursework applicability for certification, clinical hour support teams, admission requirements, and opportunities to engage with classmates and instructors. When pursuing a degree to become a certified nurse midwife, you are taking the next step in supporting the women-centered empowerment community.

Online Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) Programs

Most graduate programs in midwifery require about three years of full-time study or part-time equivalent. Graduating from a ACME accredited program may prepare you for eligibility to take the national certification exam from the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). ACME accredited midwifery programs often meet the following criteria:

  • Core faculty members are certified by the AMCB or other certifying bodies for non CNMs or Certified Midwives (CM).
  • Curriculum has several components as outlined by the ACNM Core Competencies for Basic Midwifery Practice such as the art and science of midwifery, professional responsibilities for CNMs and CMs, midwifery management, fundamentals of care, care of women, and care of newborns.
  • Clinical site support for the midwifery program is provided, ensuring students have access to competence training in areas of primary care, gynecologic, antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care.

When searching for your online CNM program, review it’s features related to accreditation, consider live classes, clinical site support, coursework examples, and general support for online students. Some universities offer online nurse practitioner programs that are identical to what their on-campus programs, allowing students to earn a degree from a university they know and whose reputation they trust without having to move.

Career Pathways for Nurse Midwifery

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on nurse anesthetists, nurse practitioners, and nurse midwives, nurse midwives care for women by providing gynecological exams, family planning services, as well as prenatal care. A nurse midwife can also be the primary care provider for the woman and her baby. Furthermore, the median pay in 2020 for nurse midwives was $111,130 per year

Contrary to Nurse Midwifery, the top states with the highest employment in nurse practitioners are California, New York, Texas, Florida, and Ohio. Contributing to the demand, there will be a 52% increase in employment growth of nurse practitioners between 2020 and 2030. However, due to the occupation, Nurse Midwives jobs will only increase by approximately 800 over the next 10 years. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) are projected to be in high demand in inner cities and rural areas. Some states are also changing their laws, so APRNs can perform more services.
