Prescriptive Authority in Maryland

Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives may apply for prescriptive authority for Schedule II-V controlled substances in collaboration with a physician.


Maryland Nursing Licensure Renewal

License renewal is required through the Maryland Board of Nursing annually except for those born in odd-numbered years and will renew every two years. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRN), registered nurses (R.N.’s), and licensed practical nurses (LPNs) must be able to provide evidence of 1,000 hours of active practice within a five-year period or completion of a board-certified refresher course. Additionally, any national certifications held must be maintained per the requirements of that certifying body.

To renew, APRNs must present the following documentation at the time of renewal: proof of active national certification, transcripts showing board-approved refresher course completed if nurse has failed to meet 1,000 practice hours, and proof signed by your employer of 1,000 hours of active practice in the past five years, if applicable.
Additional InformationAn Active Registered Nurse License from a Compact State Is Required for Standard Application. Registered Nurses from Non-Compact States May Apply for Licensure through Endorsement, Subject to a $100 Fee. All Nurse Practitioner Applicants Must Complete an Attestation Form, in Addition to the Application Forms.
